The Gianduiotti, famous chocolates in the shape of an overturned boat, were invented in Turin in the mid-1800s.
At that time cocoa was very expensive: therefore, there was a need to find a way to make the production of chocolates cheaper. The solution was to decrease the percentage of cocoa by diluting the pasta with hazelnut powder, a fruit very widespread in Piedmont: gianduja chocolate was created.
